In September 1194, it was decreed by Article 20 of the “Articles of Eyre” to establish the office of custos placitorum coronae (Latin for “keeper of the pleas of the Crown”), from which the word “coroner” is derived. The coroner is an independent judicial office holder, appointed and paid for by the relevant local authority to conducted some judicial investigations in order to counterbalance the power of sheriffs or bailiffs.
